Fall Decorating on a Budget: 6 Tips to Cozy Up Your Home Without Breaking the Bank

October 5, 2021

There’s something magical about the changing of seasons, and fall is no exception. The crisp air, the warm golden tones of the trees, the comfort of a crackling fire.. it all invites us to settle in, refresh our homes, and lean into that cozy vibe only autumn can bring. Today, I’m sharing 6 tips for fall decorating on a budget that will help you cozy up your home without breaking the bank.

Let’s dive in!

Fall Decorating on a Budget: 6 Tips to Cozy Up Your Home Without Breaking the Bank

Tip 1: Shop Your Stash

I know, I know, sometimes it’s so tempting to head straight to the store for new fall decor (I’m guilty of it too!). But if you’re trying to keep things frugal, shopping your own stash is the place to start. Lay out everything you already have and see what you can reimagine or rearrange into something that feels fresh. Scrolling Pinterest, or even flipping back through last year’s photos, can spark ideas for styling pieces you already own. You’d be surprised how new a space can feel just by moving things around.

Tip 2: Get Crafty and Creative

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought some piece of seasonal decor only for it to feel completely out of style by the next year. Last year it was plastic pumpkins, and this year, they no longer fit my style. But instead of tossing them, I’m giving them new life with a fresh coat of paint.

Don’t be afraid to play around with paint, fabric, even florals stems, to make something that actually feels like you. There are so many great DIY tutorials out there, like Sarah from She Holds Dearly’s velvet pumpkin tutorial, that walk you through making sweet fall decor with stuff you likely already have around the house. It’s easier than you’d think, and honestly, it always means more when you made it yourself.

Tip 3: Thrift Your Decor

Thrifting is one of my all-time favorite ways to decorate for fall. It’s affordable, it’s sustainable, and you end up with pieces that actually have character. I recently found a handmade throw for a fraction of what it’d cost new, and it’s become the coziest addition to my living room.

Some of my favorite thrifted fall decor finds include:

  • Down pillow inserts for seasonal covers
  • Amber bottles and vases
  • Antique brass candle holders

These little pieces warm up a space instantly, and they usually cost next to nothing compared to retail.

Tip 4: Bring in Nature

You don’t have to spend a dime to bring a little of nature’s beauty indoors. Foraging for greenery and florals is such a good way to fill your home with something fresh, and free. My mom and I went foraging at my parents’ farm not long ago, and we came home with the most beautiful wild arrangements, completely free. It’s one of my favorite ways to spend time with her, and you end up with something gorgeous for your home too.

Not into foraging? Your local farmer’s market is a great place to find deals on pumpkins, mums, and other seasonal florals. Real pumpkins and mums are affordable, timeless, and honestly just better for the environment. You could even grow your own, whether that’s a garden bed or just a few pots on your porch.

At my local market, I scored a whole stack of Cinderella pumpkins for $20 and some gorgeous mums for $6. And you’re supporting a small business while you’re at it.

Tip 5: Choose Neutral Fall Decor

This one won’t be for everyone, but if frugal and sustainable is your goal, neutral, minimal decor is the way to go. The best part? Neutral tones carry you season after season, so you’re not buying new fall decor every year. You can still work in trendy pops of color through smaller pieces, throw pillow covers, table settings, without spending much at all.

Tip 6: Wait until After Season and Add Each Year

If you can hold off till the end of the season, you’ll find some really good deals, sometimes 60% off or more. Last year I picked up several ceramic and wooden pumpkins from Hobby Lobby and Joann for a fraction of what they originally cost. So worth the wait.

Another thing that’s helped me: adding just a few pieces to my collection each year instead of buying it all at once. It spreads out the spending, sure, but it also makes you think harder about what’s actually worth bringing home. Every piece ends up feeling more intentional that way.

You really don’t have to spend a fortune to make your home feel warm and cozy for fall. A little creativity, some thrifting, and shopping your own stash can go such a long way. If you’ve got any budget-friendly fall decorating tips of your own, I’d love to hear them, drop a comment below and let’s swap ideas for making this season as cozy and affordable as possible.

“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” Psalm 37:4-5
