5 ITEMS I ALWAYS PICK UP WHEN THRIFTING

January 30, 2022

Welcome back to the blog! This week I am sharing my most recent thrift haul as well as 5 items I always pick up when I am out thrifting.

I would dare say that 85% or more of my home decor is from thrift or antique stores. If you have been keeping up with this blog, then you know I am a frugal gal and that I love to save money by thrifting. I find it to be so much fun! Plus, it is such an easy way to decorate your home with the most beautiful yet affordable pieces.

If you are interested in thrifting or antiquing, but you’re not sure where to start, check out my blog post here for beginners!

thrift haul: #1 LINENS

vintage_linens_thrift_haul

The first thing that I almost always pick up are linens. For the longest time, I would always skip over the linen section. I’m not going to lie- the idea of using thrifted linens sort of freaked me out. But now, I have a specific way that I clean them, and I don’t mind picking them up if they are in great condition! I can usually find beautiful quilts, throws, pillowcases, and tablecloths for a very affordable price. This thrift trip I stumbled across this beautiful white throw blanket for $5. I also picked up some sheers for $2 a panel.

thrift haul: #2 BASKETS

I use baskets for everything. They hold my cleaning supplies, dog toys, toilet paper, linens, pantry items, etc. I picked up these 3 lovely baskets for $1-$2 a piece. I plan on cutting off the handle on the rectangle one and using it in my pantry.

When I first started thrifting, I would literally purchase any basket that I saw for a decent price. Now, I am a much pickier about the baskets I bring home. I only bring them home if they are very sturdy, and I try to always think ahead of where I will use them. For example, I know if I need baskets for my cabinets or pantry, I prefer square or rectangle because oval/circle baskets tend to leave too much dead space. I also am not afraid to pick up baskets with handles. This used to deter me, but I have since found a way to cut off the handles without damaging the basket!

thrift haul: #3 BRASS CANDLE HOLDERS

Brass candle holders have my heart… A few months ago, I happened across a whole box of brass candle holders at an estate sale for only $3. It had over 25 candle holders in it, and I snatched it up as quickly as I could. I absolutely love pulling them all out for holidays or special occasions or even leaving them placed on my open shelving or built-ins. Since I have such a large collection, I don’t pick up every brass candle holder I see anymore; however, if I find one that is unique then I will pick it up. I can’t recommend them enough for making your home a cozy and inviting space!

thrift haul: #4 WOODEN UTENSILS

Wooden utensils are a kitchen staple for me. I love them because they are completely nontoxic, and you don’t have to worry about any heavy metals leaching into your food as you cook. Plus, they look beautiful when stored in my crocks on my counter! I found this sweet set with a wooden whisk for only $5. I also love to pick up any dinnerware utensils. All of my forks, spoons, and knives are mixed and matched. My thrift store gave me this butter knife for free since it was the only one!

thrift haul: #5 GLASS WARE

Last but not least, glassware. Like baskets, I use jars for so much storage. Big jars, little jars, jars with lids, jars without lids, mason jars, decorative jars, the list goes on and on. I love using them in my pantry to store rice, sugar, flour, and oats. I also use them in my laundry room to store detergent, oxygen whitener, and even my wool dryer balls.

Recently, I have been planning my garden (you can watch that here) and prepping for canning season. This led me to picking up any mason jars I found that was less than $1 a piece. I picked up 27 mason jars and ended up paying $22 for them all.

thrift haul: miscellaneous

Here are a few other miscellaneous items that I found while thrifting. I am thinking about doing a gallery wall down our hallway, and I would love to do it with old wooden frames. So, I picked up a few wooden frames for less than $5 each.

And lastly, my FAVORITE thing I picked up this trip was the antique brass sconce. If I could, I would base my whole house around this light. I love everything about it- the script detail, the textured glass, the antique brass finish. It is absolutely perfect!

Well, that is all for this week! I hope you enjoyed the haul and please leave a comment down below of something you always grab when you are out thrifting!
